Somebody just told me about this blog that lists the Best of the Worse Olan Mills photos. You have got to check this site out! Absolutely hilarious images (and some of the captions below them are deliciously witty and satirical).

Here's the link to view all of them: Great Olan Mills Photos

If you're looking for a workshop that can help you master your digital workflow, educate you on the latest Adobe software and tools, assist you with marketing strategies and improve your understanding of other aspects of the photography industry, then check out D-65. My wife took this workshop in Denver last summer and it completely revolutionized her workflow. It shaved hours off the post-production of a wedding and she credits the founders, Jamie Spritzer and Seth Resnick, with helping greatly improve her workflow and final product. And she tells me they're great fun too!

D-65 is offering photographik members a $50 discount to any of their upcoming seminars this year. The discount code is: photographik.

I’m really curious about the relatively new phenomenon of green weddings. It’s not a brand-new development but green weddings have become quite fashionable of late. I was doing some research and found some informative articles dealing with how to “green” a wedding. The suggestions include hiring caterers that use local farms as suppliers of organic products (buying locally reduces the carbon footprint as the vegetable, fruit or meat you purchase doesn’t have to travel a long way). Another suggestion is to hold your wedding at a local farm or outdoor setting to avoid needing to buy and use too many decorations (i.e. let nature be the centerpiece “decoration” of your wedding day). And another cool suggestion was to drink beer and wine that is locally produced. Out here in Colorado, we have a plethora of amazing micro-brews (anybody like Fat Tire or 90 Shilling?). Not only do locally produced beverages (the sparkling juice beverage, IZZE, is also produced in Boulder, CO) have a short distance to travel to be consumed at a wedding, but buying locally also helps support the local economy.

Below are some links to various articles and websites on the topic. I’m really curious to see how many of you have seen a green wedding first hand. If you’ve worked at or attended a green wedding, what did you think?

Giving Back 16jan08
I recently learned of a very cool thing that a wonderfully talented wedding photographer is doing. Her name is Jessica Claire (I’m sure many of you have heard of her) and she is holding a contest for free wedding photography. The way it works is the entrant has to submit a short essay nominating themselves or their friend or loved one for a complete wedding package. Jessica is including everything in the contest and will even fly anywhere in the country to shoot the wedding on her own dime!

I just finished reading all four of the stories of the finalists and, let me tell you, they are all very deserving. All the couples sound like great people who have dealt with various hardships in their lives. Selecting the winner will be a very difficult decision.

I think what Jessica is doing is very kind and generous. And the funny thing is, I’ll bet she’ll be as blessed by the whole experience as the winning couple.

What are your thoughts on this? Has anyone else done this sort of thing? Wouldn’t it be cool to do something like this for a deserving couple? Or, if you’re a portrait photographer, maybe doing a photo shoot for a couple who can’t afford your services?

Here’s a link to the stories of the finalists:

There’s a lot to read but well worth it. It makes you sort of want to think about how you can “do more” and help out others. Which, quite frankly, is not something I think about enough. Something to work on, I suppose.

If anyone has any thoughts to share on this matter, I’d love to hear them.

photographik 2.0 is off to an outstanding start! So far, it seems like everybody is really digging the new look and feel (and functionality). Thank you to everyone who provided us with valuable feedback during our design and development phase. Your input was invaluable. And thank you to those of you who have provided us with great feedback since launch. We will be constantly improving photographik to meet the needs of our awesome members and the photographer-seeking public at large.

Note to Top 5 members:

Please login to your account (if you haven't already) and update your listing profile image. We had to "push" the old thumbnails (they were 68x68) to the new dimensions for launch and unless you've updated your profile image, it looks very pixelated and not representative of your outstanding work. The new dimensions for Top 5 profile images are 107x107. So PLEASE update your profile pic ASAP!!!

Note to Basic Listing members:

On the old site, Basic Listing members were not given a gallery and profile area. That has changed. All Directory members now have their own profile and image gallery area. So please login to your account and upload images and textual content to your listing. I think you'll like the new control you have over your listing's images and content. And it will definitely improve your "searchability" on the engines as you'll have your own, optimized profile page on the Directory. And obviously, it will look a lot cooler to photographik visitors if your page isn't empty...

So please update your Listing ASAP!!!

Thanks and talk soon!

Jesse

photographik is now much more than a static photographers’ directory; we are a fully-functional Web 2.0 photographers’ community and network.

If you’re reading this, then we have finally launched (lots of Red Bulls and coffee have been consumed over the past few months to get this baby operational!) an integrated photographers’ “marketing tool” (the directory) with a truly Web 2.0 platform that enables our members to do all sorts of cool things. What kind of things? Well, stuff like managing your own profile and image gallery on the directory (if you’ve been accepted to the directory) and interacting and networking on the photographik forum (we know, everybody has a forum these days. But we thought we’d build one too so that our members could have another place to visit and network).

photographik 2.0Here’s a quick overview of all the new stuff:

With our new website and platform, you can do the following:

- Manage your Directory listing and profile at any time
- Upload images and manage your photo gallery
- Easily manage your billing information
- Upgrade your listing or add new listings
- Move up the page by purchasing an Almost Top 5 listing (limited to 10 per page; located beneath the Top 5 listings)
- Pay annually or monthly
- Keep up with the latest happenings on The Blog
- Chat, network and have fun on the Forum
- Participate in the Hire an Expert program

Other key improvements:

- ALL listings will load in random order every time the page is loaded. That means that a Top 5 listing will sometimes be the first of the Top 5 listings and sometimes the last. The same thing is true with Basic and Almost Top 5 Listings.
- The region-specific photographer pages will feature images of Top 5 members in the side panel. These images will also load randomly to ensure all Top 5 members are featured equitably.
- Images will be randomly featured on the main wedding and portrait photographers search pages.

What else? One word: Blurbits.

And yeah, we’ve got more kick@#$ stuff coming soon…

~Jesse
