As I have shared many times before, I love Old San Juan. To me, is one of the most romantic cities in the world. Many times I walked the streets and wondered if those walls could talk, what stories would they tell. Stories of romantic conquests? of duels of Honor? political intrigue? With all the hustle and buzz of every day life, it is easy to forget that Old San Juan is over 500 years old and it has seen many wonderful and terrible pieces of our history.
Catedral San Juan Bautista (Old San Juan Cathedral) is on of such place. It is the second oldest cathedral in the new world (the oldest is at Santo Domingo) and in more than 500 years has seen its share of "famous" weddings. One of the most recent was Dayanara Torres (a Miss Universe) and popular singer-actor Marc Anthony (he since divorced and remarried to Jennifer Lopez). Still one of the favorite places for destination weddings.

How to choose the right wedding photographer

Noticed that I didn't say "how to choose a good wedding photographer"? It is because good wedding photography is much more than technical knowledge and proficiency.

The right wedding photographer must have technical knowledge and proficiency for sure. He or she must know his camera, his equipment inside out. He or she must understand light, see details no one else see, know how to compose a image and he or she need to know how to tell a good story. Your story.
Wedding experts and sites will advice you that when looking for a wedding photographer you must ask to see his or her work, complete albums and not just his or her best images. They are right. Only by closely paying attention to a photographers work and getting to know him or her you will be able to tell if he or she is right for you. But what most expert and sites fails to tell you is what to look for. Well, you may think, we are to look for beautiful pictures. Well, yes, but you need to look for much more if you are to find the right wedding photographer.
In the first place, you need to get to know the person behind the photographer's mask. Is he or she all about himself? or Is he or she really interested in your wedding? Is he or she interested in you as a person? Tell him or her about your wedding, about how you felt in love, how he proposed to you. Watch how he or she reacts. Is he in a hurry to get to the next appointment? Are his or her eyes glazing over with a blank stare wondering when will you shut up? Does he or her only interested in selling to you? Yes, what we do is a business. It is how we pay bills and take our families in vacation. But it is a service industry, and we are there to serve you. Get the picture?
Because every photographer interprets the wedding through his or hers eyes, mind, experiences, ideas, you need to find out what he or she thinks of marriage, weddings, love, romance. If she or he is married, how they talk about their spouse? Does he or she cries at the weddings they shoot? How do they speak about their previous couple? What are they passionate about? themselves? your wedding? photography? Does he or she tell you the story behind his or her images? Are the excited about his or her work? All of that will tell you about his sensibility and motivation toward your wedding. Can you see how that will impact the way he or she capture and document your wedding?
Secondly, look at his work. Look at as many images as you are able. Look at them carefully. Not just for technical proficiency or to see if they look pretty, but to see if they tell a story. It does not matter if it a whole wedding or individual images, they need to say something about the people and the event. A wedding album is not a collection of pretty images and faces, but it needs to tell the story of your wedding.
Now days the word wedding photojournalism or documentary are in vogue. Great! But what does that mean? Ask the photographer that uses them what does they mean to him or her. Ask him how he accomplishes it. Are just an euphemism for old times "candid" shots? Is it an excuse for bad technical proficiency? Or the photographer knows how to capture your wedding in such a way that it really tells the story of your wedding day through pictures?
Documenting a wedding is much more than just taking pretty pictures of what happened in the day. Now days cameras are so sophisticated that anyone with a very good quality camera and a decent knowledge of how they work can do that. The right wedding photographer interprets what happens through a true artistic eyes using his or her technical proficiency and photographic knowledge and skills to create images that preserve forever the essence of your day. Noticed that I didn't say "take" photographs? It is because the right wedding photographer takes what is there and takes it to the next level. He or she does not just push the button, he knows how, when and why.
Hope this tips helps you find the right photographer for you. He or she is out there, you just have to ask the right question and look closely to him or her and his or her work. That will tell you if you are in front of the right wedding photographer.
Don't forget. . . the Right Wedding Photographer shoots wedding from his or her heart.

This week Photo of the Week is from a Love Story Session from Yma & Miguel. I guess this is a good opportunity to give a sneak peak of an exciting news coming up in 2010. In 2005 we raised the bar by introducing a Love Story with all of our wedding packages. If you ask any of our brides and grooms they will tell you that our Love Stories are fun, exciting and an incredible time. The images have a very natural look and are full of life. And why not, they are, after all, a celebration of your love!
We are very, very proud of our Love Story sessions how they capture the uniqueness of each couple's love and personality. At times they are very romantic, others, very passionate. They are fun and exciting. Never the same and always, a reflection of each couple's uniqueness.
That was quickly followed by adding our exclusive 5x2 movie style poster. That gave everyone a lot to talk about. They were simply blown bi them. And in 2007 we introduced our incredible and exclusive Guest Book. This custom designed 20 pages books are amazing and an essential part of what makes us so unique.
Well, be in the look-out because in 2010 we will raise the bar once again with a very exclusive offer.

I spent the afternoon and evening with a wonderful couple from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, doing their engagement shoot. We started at the beach and ended at Old San Juan for some night shooting. We also were able to shoot some images inside El Convento Hotel, place where they will have their reception.
I have come to love night engagement shoot a lot because we get some magical images. San Juan transforms itself at night and a new city comes alive.
Old San Juan has three faces, one during the day, one early evening and one late night. Each face expose a different dimension of Old San Juan as one of the most romantic cities in the world.
I still got many images to work on this shoot, but I wanted to share some of my favorite images.

Last December 20th on the cool mountains of Jayuya, Puerto Rico, Laura and Julio said "I Do". The ceremony took place at the town Catholic Church and the reception on one of the best kept secrets in Puerto Rico, Parador Hacienda Taina.
If you are considering a destination wedding and want a mountain location you will do well in considering La Hacienda Taina. What a beautiful setting for a wedding! Right in the middle of Puerto Rico's "Cordillera Central" lush green rolling hills, well, mountains.
Jayuya itself is a quite, peaceful, sleepy town. They do not even have a traffic light! No fast food places (just a BK). Loved the place, except for the many sharp curves that leads to town. Maybe it is what kept the town safe from "bad influences" from outsiders. It was quite a journey getting in as well as getting out.
Laura is from Jayuya while Julio is from San Juan. They met and fell in love while studying at the School of Medicine of "La Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara", Mexico. We had a lot of fun documenting Laura & julio wedding and getting to know their families. Here are some of my favorite shots from the wedding.
