If you want to create more interesting wedding images, you need to first get your clients to trust you. That trust comes from getting to know your clients and the best way I've found to connect with couples is to have a rocking engagement session. Not just your typical session, but a session that lays a foundation of trust for you and your clients.

Before each engagement session, I always ask my clients to fill out a questionnaire asking them about each other. Questions such as:
How would you describe your relationship? playful, energetic, traditional
What do you like to do together? hike, bike, dance
What is your favorite restaurant? (possibly a place where you can photograph and they can relax)
What type of images are you expecting? Artistic, modern, playful, sexy

Not only does this help you get to know your clients better and act as a source of inspiration for the location, but it also shows them that you are interested in knowing more about them, which is HUGELY important. Of course, it's easy to say, "I'm the photographer, I should know what type of images they want. " But it's that type of thinking that keeps photographers strapped into a singular way of thinking and shooting.

I find that by going deeper I'm able to customize the engagement experience and create images that go beyond your typical engagement shots. So when the wedding day comes and I politely ask them if they would lay down in the grass/dirt/ground (choose one), jump, run, or twirl they gladly say yes, because they trust me and my vision.
